The Kansas City Star Reports Progress for Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools

On Sept. 9, The Kansas City Star published the story "Kansas schools take a step back in quest for 'adequate yearly progress'," written by Jim Sullinger and Dawn Borman.

The story describes the challenges that the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools are facing in making AYP. However, it highlights some good news from the district. The story reports:

"Another success story this year is the Kansas City, Kan., School District, where educators saw the number of failing schools decline for the third consecutive year. The district, which high level of poverty and English language learners, had 20 schools fail to make AYP compared with 23 last year and 26 two years ago.

Kansas City, Kan., district spokesman David A. Smith said the results are encouraging but not enough.

'We want to continue to see progress,' Smith said. 'We would be the first to agree that for the sake of our kids we have to continue to increase the rate of our progress.'"
