Urban Teacher Leadership

14 KCKPS teachers graduate from the new, specially designed Urban Teacher Leadership Master's degree program

With nearly 30% of urban teachers leaving the profession within their first five years, urban school districts need strategies to help retain talented and qualified teachers. Now, a unique partnership between PREP-KC, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) has led to an innovative strategy to help meet this challenge.

This May, the inaugural class, with scholarships and support from PREP-KC, graduated from UMKC with a specially designed Master’s degree in Urban Teacher Leadership. This cohort of 14 emerging teacher leaders from KCKPS completed the challenging two-year program while continuing to teach in the district. Each one also has committed to continue teaching in the district for at least four years after completing the program.
