Kansas City businesses and post-secondary institutions can play a critical role in helping students in Kansas City's urban school districts become better prepared for college and meaningful careers. Industry Area Liaisons serve as a single point-of-contact, making it easier for you to get involved in the activities that most closely match your interests.

You can work with an Industry Area Liaison to:

  • Volunteer as a classroom speaker in a Small Learning Community in a KCKPS or KCMSD high school. An Industry Area Liaison will work with you to select an SLC with a career theme that matches your experience and expertise.
  • Sponsor job-shadowing experiences for high school students to build career awareness.
  • Host tours of your business for students and teachers from a Small Learning Community with a career theme that aligns with your business or industry.
  • Host career and post-secondary fairs for Small Learning Communities.
  • Sponsor student internships related to a Small Learning Community theme.
  • Sponsor teacher externships (summer only) to provide classroom teachers with knowledge about the business and industry areas their students may want to enter.
  • Host college visits and support college and career preparation for high school students.

PREP-KC is working in close coordination with complementary organizations throughout the metro, including One Economy and Uplink, to create a rich set of work-based learning experiences (job shadowing, workplace tours, student internships, teacher externships) and post-secondary preparation experiences (campus tours, post-secondary mini-classes, dual credit experiences) for high school students in Kansas City’s two urban districts.

When your company or educational organization shares time and talent with Kansas City's urban students, you help not only the students, but also your organization by creating a pipeline of better-prepared employees.
To learn more about how your organization can play a role, contact the Industry Area Liaison that most closely aligns with your business or industry. If you do not find a liaison that matches your industry area, please contact PREP-KC at info@prepkc.org
