Family Advocacy creates a bridge between the teachers in a Small Learning Community and students’ families. Each school staff member becomes an advocate for 15-17 students and stays with them the entire time they are in the school. A primary focus of Family Advocacy is to support all students in becoming ready for college. Advocates help students achieve their academic goals and give families consistent contact with school staff members who know their child well. Advocacy groups meet weekly, and teachers contact the families of their students on a regular basis.
PREP-KC provides funding for the Family Advocacy Specialist and the Family Advocacy curriculum in the Kansas City, Missouri School District. Additionally, PREP-KC supports Family Advocacy collaboration between the KCKPS and KCMSD.
